The best first call for a homeless or at-risk veteran
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs directs veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness to the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838. The service is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. Veterans, family members, friends, and providers may call.
The call center can connect the veteran to the nearest VA homeless-program staff. It is the most reliable starting point for determining which federal program may apply.
Understand HUD-VASH and SSVF
HUD-VASH
HUD-VASH combines a HUD Housing Choice Voucher with VA case management and clinical services for eligible veterans. The VA or authorized local process determines eligibility and referral. A private landlord or residence cannot promise a HUD-VASH voucher.

SSVF funds community organizations to help eligible veteran households prevent homelessness or move rapidly into housing. Services and availability vary by provider and location.
Gwinnett County starting points
The Lawrenceville Vet Center offers free, confidential counseling in a non-medical community setting and can connect veterans to additional VA and community support. The center is at 930 River Centre Place, Lawrenceville, and lists 678-442-3082 for appointments. Its 24/7 Vet Center call center is 877-927-8387.
Gwinnett County also uses a Coordinated Entry system for its homelessness-response network. House of Hope’s private intake is separate.
DeKalb County starting points
The Housing Authority of DeKalb County operates a HUD-VASH program for eligible veterans and families in DeKalb. Its official page says veterans are referred through VA case management and also identifies SSVF resources.
DeKalb’s Continuum of Care coordinates its formal homelessness services. A veteran already working with DeKalb staff should ask how a move outside the county would affect a voucher, case management, or program eligibility.
Cobb County starting points
The Marietta Housing Authority administers HUD-VASH within its jurisdiction, with veteran referrals coming through the VA. Cobb also has a separate Continuum of Care. Before moving to Lawrenceville, confirm that any Cobb-based voucher, court, healthcare, or case-management obligation can continue.
Where House of Hope fits
House of Hope offers shared housing for adult men and veterans in Lawrenceville. It is independent of the VA, HUD, county housing authorities, and Veterans Court. It does not determine benefits, provide VA healthcare, or promise public funding.
A veteran may explore House of Hope while also contacting official programs. The referral should clearly identify which organization is responsible for housing payment, clinical care, benefits, transportation, and ongoing case management.
