The same home may be described with more than one term, while two homes using the same term may operate very differently. Start with the person’s needs and the provider’s written practices.

Supportive housing
Supportive housing can range from permanent housing with formal case management to a shared home with practical residential structure. The word “supportive” does not automatically mean licensed care. Ask whether staff provide services directly, connect residents to outside services, or simply maintain the residential environment.

Transitional housing
Transitional housing usually points to direction and duration: the resident is moving from one situation toward another. Some programs are time-limited; others use flexible stays. Some include intensive services; others are housing-only. Ask what a successful transition looks like and what happens when the expected timeline changes.
Sober living and recovery housing
These terms generally describe alcohol- and drug-free housing for people in recovery. In Georgia, housing-only facilities are distinguished from licensed residential transitional treatment programs. A residence that provides treatment is operating in a different category from a home that provides housing while residents obtain care elsewhere.
Certification is also separate from licensure. GARR offers voluntary certification in Georgia. House of Hope does not claim GARR certification, accreditation, or a treatment license.
Halfway house
This term is too broad to use without explanation. It can mean a recovery home after treatment, housing after incarceration, a court-connected program, or general transitional housing. Ask who supervises the resident, who approves the address, and whether participation is voluntary or legally required.
Use six questions to choose
- What exact housing problem needs to be solved today?
- Does the person need clinical care, personal care, supervision, or simply housing?
- Is sobriety required, and how is that policy enforced?
- Is a court, VA program, insurer, or public agency involved?
- What will the resident pay, and what is included?
- What credentials are active, and what do they actually cover?
